David Friedman

David's workshop is titled “Games With Knives." This workshop will be a challenging and fun way to engage with fellow papercutters in a series of games developed specifically developed for our guild convention! We will be using different techniques of papercutting and your imagination in unique games that will get increasingly more challenging throughout the workshop. We will start with a 10 minute cutting from start to finish based on instructions given at the workshop and will culminate in a one hour collaborative project that the entire group will create together. Challenge yourself in interesting and amusing ways in this workshop that is sure to stretch your skills and your notions of what papercutting can be.

You will need paper (provided), cutting boards, x-acto knives (or scissors, if you prefer), pencils and a sense of fun, humor and adventure.

Melanie Kehoss

Melanie began exploring papercutting as an alternative to digital media.  She continued to experiment with cutting approaches as a graduate student at University of Wisconsin-Madison, employing craft foam, fleece, and paint swatches.  In 2008, Melanie began displaying her papercuts as lightboxes, which remain her signature.

Melanie will be teaching "Illuminated Shadowbox," where we learn how to give papercuts a mysterious glow by turning it into a lightbox. Participants will make a miniature version of Melanie's illuminated shadow boxes in this multi-media workshop.

Jodi Larson

Jodi will be teaching a workshop titled “No Scrap Left Behind: Scandinavian Inspired Piecework Collage."  Use the scraps of papercutting and collaging to create "scrapwork" out of your leftovers. Use cut pieces of scrap paper to piece together a beautiful multilayered floral scene reminiscent of rosmaling paint decor and other folk art traditions. This is a great way to break out of your "home style" and to use up bits of paper from papercutting projects and even junk mail!

Jodi Larson

Jodi will also be teaching "No Scrap Left Behind: Handmade Paper."  Tiny bits of paper are a byproduct of paper art. Reuse those colorful scraps by learning to make hand made paper. You'll learn the DIY basics of how paper is formed as you blend, pulp, decorate, and form your own small sheets of paper. Driving to the conference?  -Pack your blender!

Rosa Leff.jpg
Rosa Leff

As an art blogger remarked, “Rosa Leff's papercuts push the boundaries of the two-dimensional world. Its upon close inspection that the separation of the cut image from its backing creates a landscape of shadow that makes the work reside in neither the two nor three-dimensional realm.”

Rosa will be teaching "Fine China."  Few of us cutters think of a paper cup, a tissue, a hospital gown, or a gum wrapper when we think about paper and yet all of these things can be cut!  More than 5000 products are made (at least in part) out of paper. Learn the symbolism behind some of the world’s best loved china patterns, develop your own (or cut from an antique pattern) and create your own hand cut paper plate!

Paper Leaves Cutouts
Barbara Stoop

Barbara will be teaching a hands-on workshop titled "Painting Papers for Your Cuttings," where we will mix paste and paint to decorate paper in subtle patterns, which add depth to our paper cuttings.

Painted paper will not fade, and can be used for backgrounds, and is really fantastic for layered cuttings. Barbara will bring samples of her Polish style cuttings to show how your papers might be used and how they might add visual depth and texture to your work.

Cindy Stinson

Cindy is a Board Member for GAP and long-time member.  She majored in Art Education at Western Oregon University.   She have been an art teacher and a school librarian, and has lived and taught in Sweden, Colombia and Germany. Her influences have been the cut-outs of Matisse, graphic art of Eric Carle, prints of Sadao Watanabe and the folk art of the places she's have visited. She cuts only her own designs, using only scissors and a paper punch for small holes or a knife on heavy paper. Her papercut/collages are made from a combination of hand-painted tissue and traditional black papers.

Cindy will be teaching “Layering Your Papercuts," where you can learn to layer your paper cuts so that it almost resembles a linoleum print. Add color, depth, and detail to your paper cuts.

Kathy will be teaching "Buddhist Burial Papers," in which you will learn how to incorporate elaborate frames and mazes as borders for your cut outs.  In China, Buddhist Burial Papers were created for the recently deceased, to send them on their way to their next life in comfort, and perhaps, status intact.  The papers were designed to be burned as a vehicle to reach the afterlife.
